  Social Media and Small Business

Posted by Kevinjcull on July 5, 2013

If you are a small business owner, are you aware of the benefits to your company of engaging in social media?  Today, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+ are some of the channels businesses use to engage, communicate, and increase brand awareness.  Unfortunately, many small businesses are still “dragging their heels” when it comes to building an active presence in many of these platforms.  If you want to be thought of as a leader in your industry and stay relevant, don’t miss out on one of the most essential marketing tactics in 2013!

Social media for small businesses

According to small business advocate and consultant Brian Moran, the biggest barrier for small business when it comes to social media is that owners complain that they don’t understand it.  Moran claims that when business owners make a half-hearted or “haphazard” attempt to set up a Twitter account, Facebook page or Google+ profile, it can actually backfire and have a negative impact.  This is why it is important for small business owners to learn how to use social media in a way that benefits their company, ultimately leading to higher visibility and an increase in leads and customers.

Social media is not a “trend” that will soon be something we all see in the rearview mirror; it is actually a permanent change in our world and in society in the way we choose to communicate.

Social media is not an “option” for small business, it is a necessity

Small businesses must take the time to learn social media; to miss out on the benefits is to miss out on opportunities, and lose out on sales.  Think of it as a college course you must take!  The good thing about social media is that you don’t have to complete the course in six weeks; you can learn as you go along, and implement what you have learned.  This is not something you all of a sudden “catch on to” overnight, which should help small business owners feel a bit more at ease.  It’s a gradual process – but one that is necessary.

If you are a small business owner you should know that (although you may hope it does) social media is not going away.  Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and other well-known social media channels are here to stay, and even if they were not, you can bet there would be new platforms to replace them.  While the list of these channels is almost never-ending, the potential to expand your customer base, grow your small business, and make more money is just as infinite.

How should small business owners start out in social media?

Understandably, you want to start simple.  It can be a bit overwhelming to try to take in everything at once, so let’s take it one step at a time.

Which social media platforms you choose will depend largely on your industry, however it’s almost mandatory that companies have a Facebook page and a website with a blog!  These two “basics” are essential, regardless if you ever decide to go any further.  Blogging is something that intimidates many people, but once you get the hang of it it’s really not that difficult.  Learn how to use Facebook and build your blogging expertise, and you will be ready to branch out into other social media platforms.

While there are countless benefits to using social media for small business, the biggest benefit of all is that you will have the ability to connect with thousands or even tens of thousands of people (potential customers) that you would otherwise not have been able to!  An added bonus – once you gather a few Twitter followers and Facebook fans, they will take care of some of the marketing for you as they share your blog posts, news, and other content.
