The Importance of Author Rank in SEO

Posted by Kevinjcull on March 7, 2013

There are several major trends currently impacting SEO, one of them being author rank. Back in December of 2012, many marketing experts were announcing their views on what marketers should do in order to prepare for a successful 2013 in terms of SEO (search engine optimisation). As trusted SEO services, we want to educate and inform our readers about the importance of author rank, what it is, and what it could mean for your business.

What exactly is author rank?

Whereas page rank has long been the metric used in determining the quality or “rank” of a web page, author rank is redefining SEO in 2013, and is basically a measure of content quality and the individual who authored that content. Essentially, Google is using their own social media site, Google+, to influence the search results. Basically, if a website’s writer accounts are connected to Google+ accounts, stories or articles may appear in the search results – and they will likely rank higher than other content.

It used to be that the quality of content was mostly based on the authority of a website page or domain, but today this is no longer the case. Gradually we are seeing that search engines are measuring the quality of content based on the authority and reputation of the person who actually authored the content. Essentially, the author gets a score for reputation, and the grade that individual gets determines where that person’s content will fall in the natural search engine results.

As an experienced SEO services provider, we realise this may sound a bit confusing, but hang in with us for a moment . . .

How can you begin establishing author rank?

First, it’s important you understand that building author rank is not that difficult, but it will require time. You should also have a good understanding of how it works before you really get in the swing of things. Here are a few suggestions on how to establish author rank:

Tie the content you have written to your Google+ profile. Essentially, you will need to set your Google+ posts to public, then under the “about” section of your profile in “contributor to” provide a link to your websites.

Rich snippets of content are generally used, whereby authors of content are ranked based on engagement factors including comments on social networks, shares, tweets, and other social endorsements, and the relevancy/influence of those individuals who provide the social endorsements. Generally speaking, the more you (or your content writer) write on a particular topic, the higher author rank you can achieve due to the fact that a higher amount of content, the higher level of engagement.

Over the long run, a website’s traffic and author rank will increase the more content is added, and the more social engagement/commenting on that content.

As professional SEO services, we feel confident telling you that the days of SEO being controlled by page rank are numbered!
